Chapter 4: Night of the Centaur Festival
As Giovanni was about to cross the road, he looked off toward the bridge, where in front of the general store, he could make out 6 or 7 dark figures, with white flowing shirts, headed his way. They were blowing horns and laughing, each carrying a lantern made from a snake gourd. He could tell from their laughs, they were kids from his class. His immediate reaction was to duck away, to hide somewhere while they passed. But then, he made up his mind to go over to them.
十字になった町のかどを、まがろうとしましたら、向うの橋へ行く方の雑貨店の前で、黒い影やぼんやり白いシャツが入り乱れて、六七人の生徒らが、口笛を吹いたり笑ったりして、めいめい烏瓜の燈火（あかり）を持ってやって来るのを見ました。その笑い声も口笛も、みんな聞きおぼえのあるものでした。ジョバンニの同級の子供らだったのです。ジョバンニは思わずどきっとして戻（もど）ろうとしましたが、思い直して、一そう勢よくそっちへ歩いて行きました。
I feel like I have enough images of Giovanni looking alone and sad for the moment, so I wanted to show the kids from his class getting their lanterns ready to float in the river. Had a lot of trouble getting the color right on this one and eventually settled for this two color approach.
