“Will you marry me?”
I made a little animation for my girlfriend last year. And now we’re married :)
She lived in Japan. I lived in California. I made her this video because I couldn’t afford any more flights out there.
The words “アイちゃん boku to kekkon して下さい” means “will you marry me?” in Japanese. The song is Atarashii Asa, or New Morning, by Baobab....

Liquid Comfort :: Hot Cocoa
I was one of those kids who was actually envious of the kids with glasses and braces. I’m sure it would have been the other way around had I actually needed them, but I still think I would have looked awesome.

Liquid Comfort :: BEER
This time around I did a flattering self-portrait. Lately I’ve taken up gardening, and typically the first thing I want after working outside all day, is an ice cold beer.
For all of these portraits I’m using Avalon watercolor paper. I’ve found it helps a lot in giving my feeble brush strokes a lot more character. Its a bit pricey, but when I used the cheap, lightweight stuff,...

Liquid Comfort :: Coffee
The third painting in my Liquid Comfort series is a rework of a portrait I did about 2 weeks ago. As always, thank you for looking! :)

Liquid Comfort - Green Tea
Number 2 of my Liquid Comfort series! I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of how this watercolor stuff works. I’ve tried about 20 different brands of paper and its amazing how spending a little extra on good quality paper can make all the difference in the world.

Liquid Comfort :: Hot Soup
So I tried painting my Japanese folk tales in watercolor and failed horribly (I won’t be posting the results…I’d have to dig them out of the trash.) Through this frustrating experience, I’ve realized that I know NOTHING about painting! As much as I love digital, I REALLY want to learn the craft of painting on a real piece of paper, get my hands covered in paint, and end...

Dream Comics
I’ve been recording my dreams since I was in junior high, but never in comic form. I’m hoping to do a lot more of these if people like them. They’ll probably be just as disjointed and confusing as most memories of dreams are.

Japanese Folk Tales - Peach Boy 日本昔話・桃太郎
This is the story of Momotarou, or…Peach Boy!
The story dates back from a waaay long time ago, so I decided to set it in Heian Era Japan (around 1000AD). I have no idea what Heian Era Japan looked like, so it took awhile to dig up photos of the typical home interior, but its pretty awesome to learn about how they lived, and what they wore.
Once again an old, kindhearted couple make...

Japanese Folk Tales - Kasajizou (2)
I did a quick mock up in pencil of the thumbnail I thought had the best composition (from my previous post) to see if it still held up when I did it almost full size. My goal is to eventually do this in watercolor without the help of the computer. I may be biting off more than I can chew.
And some more old man character studies.

Japanese Folk Tales - Kasajizou 日本昔話・笠地蔵
I’ve always loved old folklore, especially the stories from Japan. I’m going to try my best to do a series of illustrations based on some of my favorite stories. If its good enough, I may try to hold a gallery when I go back to Japan. I’m really excited about the cool illustrations that could come out of this, there are some wonderful stories to choose from.
These are my...

New Year Postcard 年賀状
Its the year of the rabbit! In Japan everybody sends out postcards on New Years to practically everyone they’ve ever met in their life. Here’s mine…about 2 weeks too late. Happy New Year :)

Nothing is Forgotten: My Process
A few people asked to see my process on my short story Nothing is Forgotten, so I thought I’d try to explain as best I can how I did it. Its always a bit strange showing my workflow though, cause it feels like I’ll be found out for cheating. I can imagine the sigh of disappointment “oh…that’s how he did it? meh.”
I spent a good deal of time sketching out the...

Comic: One Last Snowfall
Although short, this is officially the first comic I have ever finished! Its based off a Japanese song called なごり雪Nagori Yuki, made famous by Iruka’s cover version.
If you can’t read the text, just click on the image. It’ll get all big for ya.
While I’ll always love Iruka’s version, when I heard this cover, it was the first time I actually got what the song...
